Most people know that brushing their teeth twice a day is important for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. However, many don’t realize that poor dental hygiene can also lead to serious health problems beyond just oral health.

Ask anyone who is a little more than fit with their dental hygiene, and they will tell you that it’s very important. Aside from fixing unsightly damage, healthy teeth and gums lead to a healthy bodied.

A recent study shows that fungi and bacteria can work together to spread decay in our teeth much faster than either organism alone. These cause several deadly diseases that can be caused by poor dental hygiene. If you’ve been skipping those trips to the dentist, think again.

Diseases caused by poor dental hygiene are some of the deadliest out there. Read on, and we’ll walk you through the consequences.

1. Periodontitis

Periodontitis is one of the severe forms of gum disease medical conditions that are caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and gums. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth loss and can even spread to other parts of the body, causing serious health problems.

The most common symptom of periodontitis is bleeding gums, which can spread bacteria throughout the body and cause infections. This can lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, diabetes, and other serious health conditions. Other symptoms include pain and sensitivity, bad breath, and loss of teeth.

2. Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is a disease caused by poor dental hygiene. It can affect any part of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, and gums. Poor dental hygiene can increase the risk of developing oral cancer by allowing harmful bacteria to build up in the mouth, which can damage the cells in the oral cavity and lead to the development of cancerous tumors.

The most effective way to avoid oral cancer is to practice proper oral hygiene on a daily basis. This means brushing and flossing at least twice a day, using mouthwash, avoiding unhealthy foods and beverages, and visiting a dentist regularly.

3. Endocarditis

Endocarditis is a rare but serious infection of the inner lining of the heart. Poor dental hygiene can increase the risk of developing endocarditis by allowing harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream and travel to the heart, where they can cause an infection.

People with pre-existing heart conditions are at a higher risk of developing endocarditis, making it even more important to get comprehensive dental services and maintain good dental hygiene.

4. Respiratory Infections

Other effects of poor oral hygiene are respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and COPD. Bacteria from the mouth can travel down the throat and into the lungs, where they can cause an infection.

This is particularly dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly or people with chronic illnesses. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups can help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria and reduce the risk of respiratory infections.

Avoid These Diseases Caused by Poor Dental Hygiene

Maintaining good dental hygiene is crucial not only for maintaining healthy teeth and gums but also for preventing serious health problems. The diseases discussed in this article are just a few examples of diseases caused by poor dental hygiene.

Regular dental check-ups, brushing twice a day, and flossing can all help prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria in the mouth and reduce the risk of developing these diseases. Remember, taking care of your oral health is essential for maintaining good overall health.
